In 1979, Hangzhou Municipal Health Bureau established the Hangzhou Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases at Hangzhou Second People's Hospital. The Department of Cardiovascular Medicine carried out artificial cardiac pacemaker installation, cardiac catheterization, coronary angiography, RF ablation and other projects in Zhejiang Province in earlier times. With the direct support of the Hangzhou Municipal Party Committee and the Hangzhou Municipal People's Government, the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, under the leadership of the Affiliated Hospital of Hangzhou Normal University, has developed rapidly. A large number of talents have been absorbed, advanced medical equipment has been introduced, and the number of ward beds has expanded from more than 50 to 180. In 2017, drug-coated balloons, coronary stenting, intracoronary ultrasound, rotational atherectomy, radiofrequency ablation for atrial fibrillation, CRT, ICD and percutaneous left atrial appendage closure for atrial fibrillation in the department have reached the advanced levels in the whole province and even the whole country. Hangzhou Chest Pain Diagnosis and Treatment Center was established in 2015, successfully passed the certification of China Chest Pain Center in 2016, then named a demonstration base of China Chest Pain Center in December 2017, and rated as a cardiovascular nursing and technical training base in April 2018, providing scientific, convenient and professional services for patients with chest pain.

Now, there are 27 cardiovascular physicians, 5 chief physicians and 8 associate chief physicians. More than 70% of physicians hold doctoral and master's degrees. It has become a large-scale cardiovascular medicine department in Zhejiang Province. It is a key discipline built by Zhejiang Province and Hangzhou City, a key discipline under the management of Zhejiang Provincial Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine and a key medical discipline of Hangzhou. The department remains in faster development compared with others in Hangzhou and completes more than 3,000 cases of cardiac interventional surgery every year.

The Basic Research Laboratory for Cardiovascular Diseases is a key laboratory in Hangzhou City. The Translational Medicine Center in the laboratory is provided with laboratory equipment worth over RMB 20 million and has top scientific talents and teaching talents introduced from Harvard Medical School and Waseda University. Now the center undertakes 3 projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation, 3 projects built by provincial and ministerial governments, 5 provincial projects, more than 10 municipal projects and 3 national continuing medical education projects. The number of publications is increasing year by year. The publication miRNA-122 Inhibitor in the Preparation of Drugs for the Treatment of Congenital Heart Disease has obtained a national invention patent. A total of 26 doctors and masters have been trained and participated in the compilation of 5 professional books.

The department has established partnerships with internationally renowned hospitals including Mayo Clinic in the United States, Kurashiki Central Hospital in Japan and St. Vincent's Hospital in Sydney, Australia. It will hold "Hangzhou International Conference for Cardiovascular Disease", set up national and provincial continuing medical education courses, and invite internationally renowned medical experts for regular surgical exchange every year, so that the techniques of the department keep up with international advanced level.

It is a large-scale cardiovascular medicine department in Zhejiang Province, a key discipline of Zhejiang Province, a key discipline built by provincial and municipal governments, a key medical discipline of Hangzhou and a key discipline of the hospital. Besides, it is a core discipline of Hangzhou Chest Pain Diagnosis and Treatment Center, a standardized training base for resident physicians in Hangzhou and a clinical practice and teaching base for colleges and universities.

The key members in the department participate in the European ESC Congress, American AHA Scientific Sessions, Beijing International Great Wall Conference of Cardiovascular Forum and Great Wall International Congress of Cardiology every year, and make presiding and keynote speeches. More than 10 scientific research projects have passed expert appraisal and won a number of national, provincial and municipal technical achievement awards and a silver award from the International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva and the New Technology Exhibition.
