Jul 28,2022

In order to implement the national and Zhejiang Province's decision to step up efforts to care for seniors in the new era, actively cope with the issue of aging population, promote the construction of a healthy Hangzhou, and improve the health literacy and health level of seniors, the Affiliated Hospital of Hangzhou Normal University recently sent medical staff to carry out the activities of bringing health to the seniors and bringing light to the community, and voluntarily screen for cataracts for the seniors in the surrounding nursing homes and other units in the Integrated Health Care System of Gongshu District, and perform cataract surgery for the patients after the screening to let them see the light again.

According to the statistics of the National Health Commission, the rate of cataracts in China is 75% for seniors over 60 years old, the incidence rate for seniors over 70 years old is more than 80%, and the number of seniors with cataracts in China has reached 35 million, and the number of blind patients caused by cataracts is nearly 50 million, with 500,000 new cataract patients every year, and the rate of increase is 8%-10% every year. The nursing homes are mostly for seniors, with an average age of over 80 years old. In order to keep them healthy and bring light to them, we contacted the neighboring units in the Integrated Health Care System and sent teams to screen for cataracts for seniors in Harmony Care Home and Longwill Care Home in Gongshu District, etc. Our hospital's Business Development Center offered a two-way referral service to open a green channel for patients referred from hospitals at the grassroots level. The team of experts performed cataract surgery for them, allowing them to see the light again in their lifetime, which won praise from the nursing homes and the surrounding communities.

Feng, a senior living in Harmony Care Home of Gongshu District, was suffering from cataracts for many years. This caused a lot of inconvenience to her life and brought depression and pain to her mental health. Director Xin of the Department of Ophthalmology performed an elaborate surgery on her cataracts. On the first day after the operation, the senior was overjoyed when the blindfold was removed and she said excitedly, "I can see! I can see the doctor, I can see my son and daughter-in-law! Thank you!

Through sending light into the community, the medical staff learned what a doctor's caring heart is and gained a full sense of accomplishment. Next, we will launch more activities of this kind so that the seniors in the community can feel the care of society and the warmth of the Affiliated Hospital of Hangzhou Normal University.
