There are currently 2 professors, 3 chief physicians, 8 associate chief physicians, and 9 doctors and masters in the department. In addition to undertaking the clinical work of gastrointestinal hepatobiliary surgery in the Affiliated Hospital of Hangzhou Normal University, it also undertakes the education and teaching of undergraduates and postgraduates in Hangzhou Normal University School of Medicine. It is a key discipline of the hospital, and gradually forms a disciplinary advantage featuring laparoscopic minimally invasive surgery.

It has set up the Association for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Minimally Invasive Abdominal Surgery, a higher-level close-knit medical treatment partnership project of the Affiliated Hospital of Hangzhou Normal University with discipline characteristics. The members of the Association are as follows: Shangrao Dongfang Hospital of Jiangxi Province; the Second People's Hospital of Chun'an County, Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province; the Third People's Hospital of Huangshan City, Anhui Province; the TCM and Western Medicine Integrated Hospital of Yuhang District, Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province; Cangnan County Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Wenzhou City, Zhejiang Province; Lianshi People's Hospital of Nanxun District, Huzhou City, Zhejiang Province; Changhua People's Hospital of Lin'an District, Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province; the Third People's Hospital of Anji County, Huzhou City, Zhejiang Province; Zhouquan Hospital of Tongxiang City, Jiaxing City, Zhejiang Province and the People's Hospital of Dorbod Mongol Autonomous County, Daqing City, Heilongjiang Province. The Association will adhere to the concept of standardization, innovation, cooperation and win-win, to jointly promote the development of minimally invasive surgery with cooperative units.

The department can skillfully and safely carry out highly difficult landmark surgeries for liver, gallbladder, gastrointestinal, pancreas, spleen diseases and various types of abdominal hernias, e.g. open and laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy, radical resection of hilar cholangiocarcinoma, radical cholecystectomy, left and right hemihepatectomy, hepatic trisegmentectomy, hepatic caudate lobectomy, spleen-preserving laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy, laparoscopic splenectomy of massive splenomegaly, laparoscopic partial hepatectomy, laparoscopic radical resection of gastric and colorectal cancer, portal hypertension devascularization and shunt, various types of hernia laparotomy and laparoscopic surgery and comprehensive diagnosis and treatment of severe acute pancreatitis. The total number of operations completed by the department amounts to more than 3500 per year, of which more than 2000 are class 3 and class 4 operations. The minimally invasive surgery of the department takes the lead among municipal hospitals, and reaches the advanced level among hospitals in Zhejiang Province. Many patients from other provinces including Jiangsu, Anhui and Jiangxi seek treatment in our hospital.

Academic status:

It is the only key discipline of a Grade 3A general hospital in north Hangzhou, with technical strength at the advanced level in Hangzhou. It is a standardized training base for Resident Physicians in Zhejiang Province and a clinical practice base for colleges and universities. The department also undertakes clinical teaching and scientific research and is the first batch of master's degree conferring unit of the hospital. It has 3 Master's Supervisors undertaking the probation internship teaching of 5 medical colleges and universities, as well as the teaching for international students. It sets up provincial continuing medical education courses every year and has long-term communication with famous medical centers at home and abroad.
